Careers in Music and Audio Engineering for Calgary Vets

Young men coming out of their last tour in the services often are confronted with some serious decisions regarding their future careers and living quarters. Although, many positions in the service do teach some very valuable job skills, some of the specialized skills are unique to military life and unless the veteran is interested in working in private security forces will not be very likely to be able to be used again. But, with some lateral thinking you can quickly re-educate yourself and get some excellent positions

But for the recent massive influx of vets coming out into civilian life in the Calgary area, finding Calgary apartments for rent can be difficult. If you quickly get that issue solved you will find that the local Entertainment and Music Industry offers an excellent opportunity for your unique skillset.Your technological experience in the service actually opens up a very lucrative and very open job field as an Audio Engineer. Audio Engineers get to travel in some highly desirable areas such as the Florida Keys , the coast of Alaska and many of the Island destinations that one wants to visit to get away from the Calgary cold. The huge plus is that rather than pay for expensive cruise or private charter tickets one gets to Captain the dance floor and make between 60k and 100k a year.

Its a lucrative position and the job field is currently wide open. The technological skills and requirements to works as an Audio tech on a  Charter Boat are rather involved. But a former Seaman is in a great position to have the majority of the required experience and knowledge. Most still do take a training course in order to get their required Audio Engineering certificates .

Taking the AE test can be quite difficult if one is unprepared, as suggested, the background one receives in the Military really gives you a leg up on the other candidates but it is in no way a shoe in for having the full breadth of knowledge required. Often, very experienced Engineers take the course in order to acquire new skills that afford them further opportunities operating in different arenas of this Industry. Technology is changing quickly and being familiar with the latest software and hardware advances is a must to stay viable.

When your really making a dance floor rock or mixing some rock stars latest hit you will really look back at your days manning the control boards on ship as being valuable experience!

Decorating Your Home Music Studio

If you are one of the lucky few people that can afford to build a music studio in your home, my hat’s off to you.  When you are planning the decor, though, there are a few different styles you may want to consider.  Using a tropical motif for your studio will help you, and other musicians relax while they are composing, helping them get out their truest sound possible.

One of the best ways to achieve a tropical style in your studio is to use bamboo blinds over the windows.  The thick slats of the blinds will help you block out the light coming in when you want to darken out the room, and let plenty of light in when you or the other musicians are in a brighter mood.

However, if you prefer not to use real wood blinds in your studio, for whatever reasons, a cheaper option is to use faux wood blinds.  These blinds mimic the style and feel of real wood blinds but generally take less maintenance to keep them looking sharp.

Regardless of which style you choose for the studio, putting together a tropical feel is going to help musicians relax and get into the mood to produce some excellent music.

Family Fun With Lego Board Games

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the whole family you might want to check out these Lego board games. Here you can find several different designs with something that will appeal to most everyone from the Lego Hogwarts game for the Harry Potter fans to the Pirate game for fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean to the Lego Robo game for kids who love robots.

The main thing is that you can find something here that that the whole family will enjoy.  My kids love the Harry Potter game and we all enjoy playing it with them.  I think that over the years will all the advances in electronics board games have unfortunately become less popular and that is a real shame because if you never spend the time with your kids playing these games they are really missing out on an important aspect of family life.

So if you’re looking for something fun to do with the family on game night every week then be sure to give some of these games a try.  They also make great Christmas presents for everyone to enjoy from the kids to parents and even the grandparents.  The main thing is that you will all be spending fun quality time together.

Gift Ideas For A 13 Year Old Boy

Are you having problems picking out a birthday or Christmas gift for a 13 year old boy this year?  For some reason 13 seems to be the age that a lot of people have trouble buying for, one reason for this may be the fact that he is now a teen and a lot of people just have no idea of what to buy for a teen.

In my experience teen boys like all of the same stuff that other boys like, of course you don’t want to get a 13 year old exactly the same thing as 8 year old for instance who may still like Power Rangers. But you probably get the idea, boys are boys and they still like the same stuff no matter what their age.  The only thing is that their stuff gets more complicated and expensive the older that they get.

So if you’re looking for some good ideas about what to get a 13 year old boy for a birthday or Christmas be sure to check out this gift guide I’ve been using it for a while now and have to say that it is spot on!  I’ve purchased several of the items profiled here for my son and he couldn’t be happier with my choices.  I really love all of the author’s choices and plan on using some of her other gift buying guides when I do my holiday shopping this year.

Why you Need a Laptop Cooler

Overheating laptop problems are the bane of music and movie lovers alike, Stuttering songs and jilting videos ruin any chance of an enjoyable experience. Most of the time these problems are caused by internal components of your laptop overheating.  The good news you can use one of the best laptop coolers to help lower those temperatures, and improve performance!

Choosing the best laptop cooler for media is a big decision. Laptop coolers vary greatly in size, performance and noise levels.  If you are a true music lover for instance you will probably want to minimize the fan noises, in which case a Zalman notebook cooler such as the Zalman NC3000 will be a great choice. It is quiet, powerful and reliable.

A laptop cooler such as this will help solve those overheating issues, allowing you to listen to music and watch your movies in peace.

If you like to play games however, you may want to look for one of the more powerful laptop coolers, since games often make your laptop work harder and hotter than media use.  Gaming laptop coolers tend to be a lot louder, but also provide much better cooling performance.

Even if you only use your laptop lightly, chances are it still gets pretty hot.  Using a laptop cooler will help prevent and reduce heat damage to your laptop!

Vang Vieng Tubing

Each year thousands upon thousands of tourists enjoy Vang Vieng tubing.  In all of south east Asia the small tourist town of Vang Vieng has, in recent years, become the tubing capital of the region.

Until recently, Vang Vieng tubing wasn’t a tourist draw in Laos at all.  The sport first began to gain traction when travellers to Laos noticed the incredible natural beauty of the Vang Vieng, Laos countryside.  Twenty years ago the town of Vang Vieng was nothing more than a bus stop on the way to the northern Laos town of Luang Prabang.  Travellers would stop for a few hours while the bus was refuelled, and before long Vang Vieng gained a reputation as a good place to stay for a few days.

The Vang Vieng tubing phenomenon came as a result of this.  Travellers to Laos stopping in the town for a few days would grow bored of sitting around, so an enterprising local with a supply of inner tubes began hiring them out to the travellers.  The backpackers loved tubing down the Nam Song River, and word quickly spread.
Today, Vang Vieng tubing is one of the biggest reasons tourists visit Laos.  In fact, the Laos tourist industry is built on inner tubes – talk about an economic bubble.  Hope that doesn’t burst (OK, I’m done with the jokes – you can come back now).

The town of Vang Vieng is today almost unrecognisable as the quaint village of the past.  The three streets of Vang Vieng are lined with bars and cafes, each playing Friends and Family Guy at top volume on an endless loop.  Bucket drinks and opium-laced pizza keep the tourists sedate in the evenings, with the promise of another day of Vang Vieng tubing in the morning.  Fun?  Certainly.  A bit of a shame?  Definitely.
So why should you go tubing in Vang Vieng?  Well, in my case it was simple.  I was in Vientiane. Laos to apply for a Thai tourist visa for me and my girlfriend.  The Thai tourist visa takes a few days to process at the Vientiane embassy, so we had a few days to kill.  Vang Vieng was only about four hours north by bus so, instead of sitting around for the weekend, we escaped sleepy Vientiane with the intention of returning for our visas the following week.

Well, Veng Vieng was lovely, if a touch overcrowded with tourists.  We had a fantastic weekend of Vang Vieng tubing, and when we returned to Vientiane several days later our Thai tourist visas were ready.

So, if you have to get your Thai tourist visa from Vientiane, Laos I recommend you make a quick trip to the north to enjoy the tubing in Vang Vieng before heading back into Thailand.  It really is a hell of a good time.

Keeping Up Appearances for your Studio

The difference between a “Party” DJ and a Professional DJ comes down to one simple thing; Professionalism. Its that simple.

A Professional DJ or Studio tech knows that in all elements of their exterior promotional and business dealings they must keep a professional and cutting edge appearance and approach.

Sometimes this means splurging for a few things that may not seem to be directly related to the music business. One of these things is a professional office or studio space. It is not uncommon to use an extra room in ones residence for such things, which is acceptable but them one must be sure to treat the “public” areas of the home as they would their office.

This includes having great signage and being easy to find for office or studio visits.  A custom address plaque  is a great first step towards a professional exterior. If your clients arrive at your home/office frustrated after having difficulty finding your home or getting parking the entire experience could have a negative vibe. Buying an easy to see address plaque or custom signage that assures your customer that the residence or office they see is the correct one is very necessary for a business. You may spin amazing and really know how to control a crowd at a party, but if you cant keep the clients happy before the contract is signed you will have very little chance of every getting an opportunity to prove that.

5 Branches of Law Enforcement You May Not Know About

When people hear the words ‘Law Enforcement’ they usually think of police officers dressed in blue, driving around in marked cruisers with flashing lights mounted to the roof. There are, however, many other branches of law enforcement out there. Here are 5 branches of law enforcement you may not know about with a brief description of each.

span style=”font-family: Verdana, serif;”>The Bureau of Indian Affairs Police

span style=”font-family: Verdana, serif;”>The Bureau of Indian Affairs (Also known as the BIA Police) is responsible for providing law enforcement services to Indian reservations that are not equipped with their own police departments. Additionally, they oversee tribal police organizations to ensure that justice is being served to the population of the reservation.

span style=”font-family: Verdana, serif;”>They respond to the same type of criminal activity that occurs off of reservations, they have the authority to apprehend and arrest anyone who is participating in criminal behavior, and they also have the authority to serve warrants and subpoenas. The BIA police officers are delegated through the Office of Justice Services Law Enforcement.

span style=”font-family: Verdana, serif;”>Bureau of Land Management

span style=”font-family: Verdana, serif;”>The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for regulating the activities of people who use public land, and waterways scattered across the United States. These activities include things like fishing, camping, hiking and biking, and many other outdoor activities. The amount of acreage they are responsible for monitoring is staggering. For instance, this branch of law enforcement is responsible for overseeing more than 205,000 miles of fishable streams, over 500 boating access sites, 69 National Back Country Byways, more than 2 million lakes and reservoirs and 55 million acres of forests and woodlands.

The Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations Division

span style=”font-family: Verdana, serif;”>Also called the IRS-CI, this branch of law enforcement investigates suspected violations of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States. This is the only agency that has the authority to investigate criminal violations of the IRS code. There are more than 4,000 employees in this law enforcement branch including approximately 2,800 agents. Additionally, this unit assists the Food and Drug Administration with investigations such as prescription drug marketing violations, the manufacturing and sale of unapproved or counterfeit drugs, and product tampering.

Special Jurisdiction Police

This category of law enforcement actually encompasses a vast number of law enforcement officers. These police officers have jurisdiction over specific locations such as colleges, hospitals, public schools, and many other public buildings. They also have jurisdiction over things like arson investigations, and gaming enforcement. Some states limit the authority of these police officers to a specific place, while other states give a broader jurisdiction of authority. Special Jurisdiction Police are also known as Special-Purpose Police, Special District Police, or Special Enforcement Police.

Transportation Agency Policing

This branch of law enforcement encompasses approximately 9,000 officers that monitor areas of transportation such as airports, railways, bridges and tunnels as well as maritime ports. Since 911 this group of law enforcement officers has continued to grow. In addition to manpower, many of these agencies incorporate the use of canines in their daily duties.

Trudi Dyer often answers questions students may have about law enforcement training courses.

Day Job Uniform Woes

I may blog frequently on the music business and play lots of gigs. But I still have a day job. I dont have to have it, but with a couple of dependents and aging parents is important to me to have a very secure income and insurance benefits.

My Day Job is rewarding anyway and is music related. I work as an Activities Director for a Senior Home. We often integrate art and music into our events.

My only complaint would be that I feel a little bit stifled because I have to wear a uniform. Ive left plenty of jobs that made me wear uniforms. It just seems wrong, unoriginal and robotic. Its hard to be me when Im made to look like everyone else.

But in my current position I had some control over the sourcing of the uniforms. Plus, as an attachment to a Hospital our uniforms are scrubs. This is a bit more understandable then a stupid hat at a restaurant or specific color pants in a sales job.

When I first encountered scrubs I was highly turned off. They lack tailoring and never seem to fit anyone well.

It was suggested that I look into the options available at:

http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women/

I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could get our company logo embroidered, custom sizing and even get functional pockets. If your in a health field and you find vanilla scrubs to be uninspiring take a closer look yourself.
